We get it. Life is busy. The food shop is often a quick dash between work, dinner, and everything else on your list. And anything that adds extra steps, like swapping to refill, can feel like a hassle.
But here’s the thing: refilling doesn’t have to be perfect or time consuming. It could just be one small thing you do a little differently.
Maybe you pop into the refill station when you’re already at the shop. Maybe you only top up one thing this week. Maybe you give it a go for the first time because it’s Plastic Free July and you’re curious.
Whatever it looks like, that simple choice to refill is worth celebrating.
Why refill?
Plastic Free July is all about finding simple, realistic ways to cut back on single-use plastic. One great way to do that? Refill instead of rebuy.
It’s one of those small swaps that really adds up. Swapping a plastic-wrapped item for a refill version, whether it’s oats, dish soap or rice, means one less piece of plastic in the bin. And if it becomes a habit, that’s a lot of plastic avoided over time.
So if you’re not sure where to begin this Plastic Free July, refilling one item is a great way to start.
And to make it easier, we’ve created a few quick videos to show how simple it can be. Check them out here.
Refill tips to get you started
No overthinking required, just a few practical ways to make it work in real life:
- Start small
Choose one or two everyday items to refill first. Oats, rice, pasta, laundry detergent are all good options to begin with.
- Use what you’ve already got
There’s no need to buy fancy containers. Clean jars, takeaway tubs, bottles or any container with a lid will do the trick.
- Forgot your container? No worries
Most refill shops have spares to borrow or buy. Just ask when you get there.
- Keep a refill ready to go
Pop a few empty containers into a bag and leave it somewhere handy. The front door, bike basket or in your car, so you’re ready when the moment strikes.
- Ask questions
Every refill spot is a little different. If you’re unsure, just check in when you arrive, most places are more than happy to explain how it works.
- Don’t stress if it doesn’t happen
Refilling isn’t always the easiest option, and that’s okay. Whether it’s time, cost, or just life getting in the way. Skip the guilt. Do what works for you, when it works for you.
