Here at Wastebusters, we’ve noticed something rather intriguing: one of the most popular items on our front yard till in 2024 is something we call the “Bits & Bobs” button. You might be wondering, what exactly is a bit or a bob? And why are so many of them flying off the shelves? Well, dear reader, we’re here to solve that mystery (or at least have a little fun trying).
What exactly is a “bit” or a “bob”?
We like to think of bits and bobs as the unsung heroes of the secondhand world. They’re those small, seemingly insignificant items that are destined to become something much bigger in the hands of a creative soul…or simply because they fit perfectly into the messy drawer at home. Here are a few of our favourite definitions of these elusive bits and bobs:
- “I have no clue what this item is, but it looks to be some type of bit or bob.” It could be a random widget, a spare part, or just something that defies easy classification. But trust us, it has a purpose…somewhere.
- “This looks like something I would put in my messy drawer at home that will come in handy at least once.” Ah yes, the “just in case” items. Maybe it’s a piece of ribbon, a mystery tool, or a zipper. But we all know, it will definitely come in handy one day.
- “This is definitely the bit I’ve been missing from my something.” You know that feeling, when you’re halfway through fixing something, and then…you realise you’re missing just one thing. That one elusive bit or bob that makes everything click into place.
- “The random-but useful item that could complete a project you didn’t even know you were working on.” These bits and/or bobs have a funny way of showing up right when you need them most. You may not know what you’re doing with them at first, but trust us, they’ll be the secret ingredient in your next project.
- “The ‘too cute to resist’ bob.” Some bits and bobs are purely for the aesthetic, like that vintage doorknob or charming little trinket. Maybe you don’t need it, but it sure does bring a smile to your face.
Bits & bobs = big things!
Now, here’s the fun part. All these bits and bobs add up to bigger things. Every little piece can contribute to larger projects, renovations and even memories. That button you pick up from the till might be just the thing that makes your handmade project perfect, or the extra nut you needed to complete a renovation. Bits and bobs have a knack for transforming into something truly special.
And here at Wastebusters, we see how these seemingly small, inconspicuous items contribute to a bigger story. They’re part of the quality donations that help us move closer to zero waste while inspiring creativity, sustainability, and a bit of fun along the way. Who knew that a stray bit or bob could have such an impact?
But wait – what’s a “bric-a-brac”?
Now, we must address a crucial question: What about the bric-a-brac button? It’s another button on our shop till, but what exactly does it mean? Is it just a fancy term for bits and bobs? Or is it something else entirely?
We’ve pondered this at length, and while we can’t say we’ve come to a conclusion, we have a theory; perhaps bric-a-brac is the more refined, vintage cousin of the humble bit or bob. Maybe it’s all “bits” and “bobs” that have been around for a little longer, have a certain patina of charm, or just look like they belong in an antique store rather than the messy drawer.
But we can’t be sure. The mystery of bric-a-brac remains unsolved.
