Enviroschools & Zero Waste Education
Nicky and Damian are our facilitators who work with local schools in Queenstown and Wānaka helping them along their journey towards sustainability. They facilitate the Enviroschools kaupapa and Zero Waste Education programmes and their roles are part-funded by the solid waste department of QLDC.
Enviroschools is a holistic programme that puts a sustainability lens on all aspects of the curriculum, and fosters child-led action around sustainability within schools. The Enviroschools kaupapa is all about students and staff creating a healthy, peaceful, sustainable world, directed by the five guiding principles: empowering students, learning for sustainability, Māori perspectives, respect for the diversity of people and cultures, and sustainable communities.
Nicky and Damian are the human links between the schools and the kit as well as all of the other Enviroschools in the district and across the country. They also help foster relationships between the schools and other groups in the community.
The schools and youth groups we currently have engaged are:
Queenstown Primary School, Glenorchy School, Remarkables Primary School, Shotover Primary School, St Joseph’s School, Holy Family School, Arrowtown School, Wānaka Primary School, Hāwea Flat School, Makarora Primary School, Wakatipu High School, Te Kura O Take Kārara, Kingsview School, Wānaka Preschool, Aspiring Beginnings, Montessori Children’s House Wānaka, and Kahu Youth.
Zero Waste Education provides in-class teaching on a variety of sustainability topics, including recycling, reuse, packaging-free lunches, landfills, food waste, composting and worm farms. The programme enables children to investigate the link between the earth’s natural resources, the products they use and see around them, and the resulting waste that pollutes our environment.
