Back to Composting

Our feathered friends love all your food scraps. Create a 10-20cm deep mulch pit with wood chips or straw, about one metre by one metre for two chickens; more chickens = bigger area.

This is where you will feed them. Chuck all your food scraps into here. It doesn’t matter if they don’t eat everything as it is scratched into the mulch pit along with their poop and slowly composts down.

Every one to two years dig out the pit and use the compost that these chickens of greatness have created for you. Then refill and start again. Easy peasy

This compost has the potential to be very rich so use it sparingly.

If you haven’t got chickens but are thinking about it, the Egg Producers Federation of NZ have some basic information on their website.
