Better Building Resource Circulation project
Wastebusters, in partnership with the Better Building Group/WAO New Zealand, received funding from Queenstown Lakes District Council’s Waste Minimisation Community Fund (2020/2021) for the Better Building Resource Circulation project.
We delivered workshops, information sessions and site tours, and found there is strong interest across the community in reducing building waste to landfill, and a desire for local reuse solutions to keep building resources in circulation.
As part of the project we developed waste minimisation resources for the residential construction industry, and talked to local builders and homeowners about their resource recovery journeys.
Our thanks to Dunlop Builders, CBG Quality Construction and homeowners Claire and Sean O’Connell for sharing their stories with Wastebusters.
CBG Quality Construction: Building without the skip
CBG Quality Construction is bucking a trend that sees its industry contribute 40-50% of the waste to landfill in New Zealand.
With seven generations of builders in his blood, CBG Managing Director Craig Gollop is always trying to find better ways of doing things. From the type of house they build to the way they manage the site, the recycling and the rubbish – CBG does things differently.
Dunlop Builders Ltd: Reducing building waste
Dunlop Builders has been in business for almost two decades. Keenly aware the construction industry is a big contributor of waste to landfill, Dunlop has taken steps to reduce the impact of their projects.
Co-owner Donnelle Dunlop says it’s been quite a journey from those early days when they first tried to implement more sustainable waste management practises.
Building a home without a skip: homeowners perspective
Homeowners Claire and Sean O’Connell talk to Wastebusters about building their home without using a skip and finding creative ways to use leftover material around their home.
