Enviroschools and Zero Waste Education
Nicky and Damian are our facilitators who work with local schools in Queenstown and Wanaka helping them along their journey towards sustainability. Their roles are partly funded by the solid waste department of QLDC. They use two amazing education packages in their work – Enviroschools and Zero Waste Education.
Enviroschools is a holistic programme that puts a sustainability lens on all aspects of the curriculum, and fosters child-led action around sustainability within schools. The Enviroschools kit is an amazing resource, containing many tools which will help both students and staff work out what they would like to change and then empower them to make those changes.
Nicky and Damian are the human links between the schools and the kit as well as all of the other Enviroschools in the district and across the country.
The schools and youth groups we currently have engaged in the Enviroschools programme within QLDC are; Queenstown Primary, Glenorchy Primary, Remarkables Primary, Shotover, St Josephs, Holy Family, Arrowtown, Wanaka Primary, Hawea Flat, Makarora Primary, Wakatipu High, Wanaka Preschool, Aspiring Beginnings, Wanaka Montessori , Montessori Queenstown & Kahu Youth. Wastebusters also work with additional early childhood centres through the COEYES early childhood sustainability cluster.
Zero Waste education provides in-class teaching on a variety of sustainability topics, including recycling, packaging-free lunches, reuse and landfills, to students between years 3 and 8.
