There’s been a bit of a furore over Queenstown’s recycled glass going to landfill, as Mountain Scene revealed in this article. The good news is that all glass you recycle with Wastebusters is sent to the O-I plant in Auckland to be made into new bottles.
Gina wrote this column for the ODT about how to make sure glass is really recycled.
Whether recycled glass is turned into new bottles or dumped in the landfill depends on the way glass is collected for recycling. If you want it to be made into new bottles, then you have to collect it in a separate bin to avoid contamination, and then colour sort it.
