Non-recyclable packaging? Ridiculously unnecessary packaging? Packaging that is harmful to the environment? Put in a nomination (or more than one) for the Worst Packaging Award. And while you’re on the www.unpackit.org site, nominate your favourite packaging for the Best Packaging Award. Nominations are now open for the 2012 Unpackit Awards.
The awards are for the Best and Worst Packaging sold in NZ stores, and will be judged by public vote.
This year for the first time, there will be different categories for the awards: Food and drink, Toys and kids stuff, Electronics, Personal hygiene, Sporting equipment and Others.
Nominations for the awards opened on October 12th, and there were a flood of nominations in the first week – some of them from people who had been waiting a whole year since the last awards, and some from viewers of the Fair Go show on packaging. Fair Go came down to Wanaka Wastebusters in early October and spent the day get down and dirty with recycling, and talking packaging with us.
Ali Mau piled the packaging up high on the conveyor belt and asked Wanaka Wastebusters staff how much of it can be recycled. “Maybe ten percent,” was the answer! No wonder nine out of ten people we surveyed earlier this year said they had to deal with too much packaging. The Unpackit Awards were set up to give people a voice when it comes to their frustrations with packaging. Speak up now!
