The Fair Go crew came down to film at Wanaka Wastebusters last week. No, we haven’t been caught doing something naughty – they just wanted to talk about our favourite subject – recycling! Great timing with the Unpackit 2012 Awards just announced. They loved Wanaka Wastebusters and wanted one in Auckland.
During the day, we had Ali Mau dangling her feet in the recycling, sorting the paper bin and sifting through rubbish on the conveyer belt. She was all positive about Wastebusters, especially that it is full of colour and people. The day we filmed was right at the end of the ski season, and there was a constant flow of people in and out, dropping off secondhand goods and recycling.
The Fair Go crew spent the day at Wanaka Wastebusters and saw round the shop, the recycling yard and every nook and cranny. At the end of the day they asked Bis – so is it really worth recycling? He showed them head-high bales of plastic in a long corridor.
“If we weren’t recycling,” he said, “this would be going into the landfill. This is just from Wanaka. Multiply that out by the population of Auckland and you get the reason. If we didn’t recycle, all this rubbish would be left in our land.”
