Returning from my wee holiday, catching up on some work, I came across some fantastic pics from last months Keep New Zealand Beautiful clean up week. It warms my cockles to see so many wonderful volunteers of all ages donning fluro’s and rubber gloves, grabbing a bag, and cleaning up our roadsides.Every year KNZB organise a nationwide clean up, encouraging groups from all over new zealand to get involved and have a huge tidy up. It really is fantastic…. but to be honest, it shouldn’t have to happen.
People should take pride in what an amazing country we live in. Education is everywhere these days. Maybe people can’t tell the difference between an apple core and a glass bottle….. I mean, they both break down… Don’t they??? NO, THEY DO NOT!!!

When you live somewhere as beautiful as this…..

It makes us really sad when each year we pick up this from our roadsides, lakefront, parks and other places of beauty…….

our KNZB collection!

It’s as simple as that, but I guess if you are reading this blog, you will already have knowledge of the basics of whats right and wrong when it comes to litter disposal… so, rant over, let me tell you about the fantastical wonderous amazing folks that gave up their time to get together on a perfect sunny blue sky day to clean up our town.
This year KNZB week ran from 20-27th Aug. We had many volunteer groups organise clean ups in and around town, covering playparks, lakefront, roadsides and more.
We had The Wanaka Lady Lions, the Scouts, Friends of Pembroke Park, Wanaka Walking Group, Rotary, Hawea Comm. Assn, and of course our own team from Wanaka wastebuters along with a big crew from Wanaka YHA. Thanks to all.

The Wanaka Wastebusters big clean up, with a huge shout out to Wanaka YHA

  • During the week a total of 133 bags of litter were collected!
  • 55 People gave up their time throughout the week to pick up litter.
  • 67 of the bags collected were recyclable.
  • 66 of the bags were non recyclable waste.
  • Last year we collected 127 bags of litter from the same areas.
  • That’s a lot of litter dropped in our town alone in one year!!!!

some of the bags collected this year

There was a lot of shrapnel from the roads, tyres, shredded and whole, parts of road signs, some irrigation pipe….  A small % of the waste can be accounted for from falling off passing trucks and lorries, the rest…. well its just mindless disposal.
A huge congratulations to KNZB for another year of keeping New Zealand Beautiful, a huger thank you to all the people who picked up litter, thank you to Bernie at McGregors for the bread and New World for the Sausages to feed all the hungry pickers!!!  (come along next year…. there is a sausage sizzle thrown in for your efforts)

Woooohoooooooooooo.. Good work team!!!!
